Uncharted made more than $400 million at the global box office.

PortAventura World has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment to open the world’s first ‘dark ride roller coaster’ inspired by the 2022 film Uncharted in 2023.

The new ride will be a thrilling and immersive experience, with visitors searching for “one of the world’s greatest treasures”, according to a release. The €25 million coaster will be created in collaboration between Intamin, Sally Dark Rides and 1050 studio. The ride will be located in the resort’s Far West zone and includes a pre-show.

Uncharted, based on the PlayStation video game franchise by Naughty Dog, was released in February 2022. It made more than $400 million at the global box office.

New €25 million attraction

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film stars Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle and Antonio Banderas.

David Garcia, PortAventura‘s EVP and managing director, said the coaster will “create great moments and memories for families and friends that come to spend their holidays and free time in our resort”.

“The team at PortAventura World has designed a thrilling ride so that fans of the game and film can now step into Nate and Sully’s shoes and go on their own white-knuckle, treasure-hunting race,” said Jeffrey Godsick, EVP of global partnerships and brand management and head of location-based entertainment at Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Following the huge success of the Uncharted movie, we’re excited to see this entertainment franchise further expand into new and exciting spaces,” added Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions.

Sony’s LBE plans

PortAventura World is one of the largest leisure destinations in Europe. Since opening in 1995, the resort has enjoyed more than 90 million visits. Earlier this year, PortAventura World purchased its first hotel outside of the resort.

Chessington World of Adventures Resort and Sony Pictures recently announced the world’s first Jumanji-branded land.

Launching in spring 2023, the £17 million ‘World of Jumanji’ area is based on Sony Pictures’ $2 billion film franchise.
