A £12.5 million ($16m/€14.3m) attraction is part of plans for new facilities at a former prison in the English county of Cornwall.
In total, £30 million is to be invested at Bodmin Jail with multimedia and themed sets recreating life in the prison up to 200 years ago. In addition, Cornwall Council is reviewing a planning application for a 63-bed hotel.
A highlight of the plans is a Dark Walk experience, “a state-of-the-art, automated theatrical space” that will bring the jail’s vivid stories to life. Visitors will be able to walk through the 18th and 19th Centuries’ village, the moor, coastline and a cavern. Sarner is creating the attraction.
The rejuvenated jail is expected to draw visitors to the Cornish town from far and wide once the Dark Walk experience is open. Existing local attractions include the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, The Courtroom Experience, The Town Museum, Regimental Museum and St Petroc’s Church. ”Name another town in the county that has that,” says Bodmin Jail’s Chris Wilkes.
A planning decision is expected after a site visit in July. If the attraction is given council approval, it should be operational by 2019.
