Women actors will play a court judge, a plague doctor, a monk, a jester and a torturer.

To support International Women’s Day 2023, the Blackpool Tower Dungeon will have an all-female cast this weekend.

The UK attraction, which is closed on International Women’s Day (8 March), will instead celebrate the day on 5 March.

“Having an all-female cast is such an amazing experience for the actors who will be involved, and secondly, for people to see that we are actively taking a stance; we are diverse and proud of what we do,” said Jamie Humphreys, a performance supervisor at the Blackpool Tower Dungeon.

Every show on 5 March will offer a full female cast, with women actors taking on job roles including a court judge from the 1600s and a monk from the Dark Ages.

Providing a trip through Lancashire’s murky history, women actors will also be playing a jester with a dark sense of humour, a plague doctor, and a torturer.

Per a press release, the resident torturer has some interesting tools to show guests, as well as an “important message on what roles women can play in society”.

“I love that we’ve brought these strong women together for a special experience for guests and the team. We’re standing with women on International Women’s Day,” added Katie Buchanan, a lead actor at the Blackpool Tower Dungeon.

Featuring a cast of theatrical actors, special effects, a ride, and stages and scenes, the Blackpool Tower Dungeon is owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments.

Merlin recently unveiled its new attraction for Blackpool’s seafront. The £2.3m Gruffalo & Friends Clubhouse will join the company’s seven other attractions in Blackpool when it opens in May 2023.
