The Park Playground’s Don’t Scream! VR escape room wins at 2023 XR Awards

Don't Scream VR experience

The Park Playground, a unique VR franchise, has announced that its horror VR escape room, Don’t Scream!, was chosen as the winner of the Best Arts and Entertainment Solution category at the 2023 XR Awards in May. These awards are the definitive guide on augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and virtual reality (VR) technologies in business, and are designed to celebrate excellence in VR, AR, MR, metaverse technology and innovation.

One of the members of the judging panel said: “The judges loved how The Park Playground is pushing boundaries of what is possible on a mobile device. They have created a truly impressive and immersive experience.”

Unique audio output tracking

Don’t Scream! is a haunted escape room in virtual reality, featuring a ground-breaking concept called audio output tracking. Throughout the 30-minute encounter, audio output equipment tracks participants’ decibel levels as they move through the escape room. As they respond to unforeseen and scary aspects they encounter along the way—all of which are crafted to test the players’ ability to hold back their screams—each player’s voice volume is carefully watched. They will lose points if they scream.

“We’re thrilled that Don’t Scream! has been recognised for its innovation in the LBE VR market,” says Peter Vindevogel, CEO at The Park Playground. “At The Park, we’re focused on striving for the best possible guest experience and by measuring and tracking audio output, we’ve added a whole new layer of excitement and immersion to the players’ experience.”

“We’d like to extend our congratulations to all the other category winners, and we’d like to thank XR Today and all the judges for recognising our project as the ‘Best Arts and Entertainment Solution’ of 2023.”

This month, The Park Playground is opening its second UK venue. The new immersive virtual reality entertainment venue in Birmingham will be the firm’s 13th venue worldwide. The Park Playground has seen a year of record growth and the new site is part of an ongoing expansion programme.
