Thorpe Park’s new roller coaster, dubbed ‘Project Exodus’, will be the UK’s tallest and fastest, the park has revealed.
The UK theme park‘s plans to build a new coaster were approved by Runnymede Borough Council in November 2022.
Consultancy firm Lichfields said in a planning statement: “The redevelopment will refresh the ride offer in this part of the resort and will deliver Thorpe Park Resort’s first roller coaster since The Swarm in 2012.
“The redevelopment will involve the removal of existing rides in operation, namely Lumber Jump, Rocky Express and Timber Tug Boat, as well as Old Town Grill and other theming features.”
Now, Thorpe Park has teased its latest ride on Twitter, writing on 16 August: “We couldn’t let National Roller Coaster Day go by without mentioning a little thing we call ‘Project Exodus’ – our new coaster coming soon to Thorpe Park.
“Not only is it going to be the UK’s tallest roller coaster, but it’ll also be the UK’s fastest!”
The new attraction, according to the approved plans, will feature a steel track supported by steel columns and “partly positioned over water” with a maximum height of 72 metres.
“The proposed roller coaster forms a crucial element of the resort’s post-Covid-19 recovery,” the planning statement said.
‘Project Exodus’ to launch next year
“Investment in the renewal and enhancement of rides and attractions is paramount if the resort is to sustain interest and remain competitive in the leisure and tourism market.”
The upcoming “exhilarating experience” is located on green belt land but “will not adversely affect views, or the openness of the green belt”, Thorpe Park said in the proposal. It will include “associated facilities” such as a photo shop and F&B outlet.
Elsewhere, Alton Towers has started rebuilding its new Nemesis coaster. Additionally, the park’s new indoor attraction, dubbed ‘Project Horizon’, has been given the green light.
Via SurreyLive, Thorpe Park’s new coaster is scheduled to open in 2024.
