The Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) is the body that represents zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks and sanctuaries across Australasia, championing conservation, animal welfare and education across the sector.
A commitment to animal welfare is at the core of everything ZAA stands for. They follow The Five Domains model of animal welfare which informs all accreditation, ensuring that their approach is well-rounded and based on science.
In terms of conservation, ZAA along with its members operate over 100 different breeding programs aimed at increasing population numbers and aiding recovery for threatened species. These efforts are not limited to species endemic to Australasia but extend to increasing populations of animals from all over the world.
ZAA has over 100 accredited members across the region. Every year through their work, 122 million visitors have access to nature, 1.1 million students are able to take part in educational sessions, and 629 conservation programmes are supported with over $20 million going towards global conservation efforts.
Membership
In order to become a member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association, attractions and organisations must obtain and maintain ZAA accreditation by meeting animal welfare, conservation, safety and sustainability standards.
Corporate membership is also available by application from those who are supportive of the zoo and aquarium sector and align themselves with the association’s goals of welfare and conservation.
2024 ZAA Conference
The Zoo and Aquarium Association hosts an annual conference that brings together association members from across the region. At the conference, attendees can enjoy a wide variety of learning and networking opportunities including icebreakers, keynotes, educational tours, workshops and more. The aim of the conference is for members to share best practices, strengthen collaboration within the sector, and promote animal welfare and conservation strategies.
