greenloop: Closing the loop – how attractions can lead on e-waste sustainability

News
Raymond Kent to speak at greenloop 2025 on AV sustainability and e-waste in visitor attractions

Join us online on Wednesday, 14 May at 1 pm BST for a session with Raymond Kent, senior design leader | principal, DLR Group.

Kent will discuss the need for the AV industry to be more sustainable. He will explore greener ways of thinking about AV within visitor attractions, such as Smart AV and a 360 degree lifecycle approach. Attendees will be invited to consider how they can act in their own organisations to reduce the impact of AV, for example by looking at procurement practices, and design and infrastructure planning.

As well as being a pollution issue, e-waste also presents an opportunity for repair and reuse models, and even “urban mining” of rare earth metals. Do other sectors do better at reuse? How can we work together to reduce our impact? Join the discussion and be part of the solution at greenloop 2025.

e-waste is a growing issue

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a rapidly growing global issue. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that in 2022, an estimated 62 million tonnes were generated worldwide, with only around 20% being properly recycled. This waste stream contains both valuable resources and harmful materials.

Improper recycling practices leads to exposure to toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, causing severe neurodevelopmental issues in children, and adverse birth outcomes. Despite international efforts, the illegal shipment of e-waste to less developed countries continues.
