SSA Group launches new compostable packaging candy program

News
SSA Group compostable candy packaging

SSA Group, a best-in-class provider of integrated guest services, has announced that it will be launching a new compostable packaging candy program in Q2 of 2024. The new initiative will launch first with three SSA zoo partner locations, with additional locations to follow.

This is part of SSA Group’s commitment to sustainability and its Climate Action Plan, as the firm works to disrupt outdated practices in the cultural attractions sector, analysing every phase of the supply chain to make more sustainable, planet-friendly choices.

Packaging with a lower environmental impact

The candy assortment will include four tasty and different styles of palm oil-free gummies, replacing candy that is currently packaged in single-use plastic. The new packaging will feature industrial compostable material, which biodegrades under industrial composting conditions into organic biomass. It will also be made from renewable materials, including regenerative materials grown on responsibly managed plantations.

The initiative will contribute to fossil fuel reduction by reducing the amount of virgin fossil fuel content and will also help to reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by production and delivery. Furthermore, the packaging will feature water or biobased inks that do not require petroleum-based solvents.

This is yet another step in creating a more sustainable gift shop and product offering for guests while continuing to push the industry towards more sustainable offerings.

In other news, the firm has been working with partner Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden to help the attraction achieve its goal of becoming Net Zero Waste by 2025. Together with community partners, a cross-departmental team at the zoo set out to make its major 2023 fundraising events zero waste. They were successful in diverting 3 tons of recyclable materials and 2 ½ tons of rubbish from the landfill.

SSA Group also recently announced that it is providing retail services for the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle. The firm, which took over the retail operations in early November, also provides culinary services at MoPOP.
