Malta Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka Wevr

Wevr, a creative technology company focused on creating virtual worlds and immersive spatial experiences, has revealed its design for the Malta Pavilion Experience at Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan. The immersive installation will greet visitors from around the world from April 13 to October 13, 2025, highlighting Malta’s vibrant heritage and ambitious goals at the international event.

Entitled “Catch the Wave,” this multi-sensory experience was developed in partnership with Malta Enterprise under the direction of Wevr co-founder and CEO Neville Spiteri.

“What better way to illustrate Malta’s forward-thinking future than by using immersive technology to surround visitors with the sights and sounds of Malta’s rich history in the Mediterranean, alongside our ambitious vision for tomorrow,” says Malta Enterprise CEO George Gregory.

“Wevr’s creative vision and mastery of next-generation technologies made them the natural choice to showcase all that Malta offers in terms of heritage, industry and innovation.”

Blending art, science, culture and nature

Highlighting sustainability and technological progress, the pavilion blends art, science, technology, culture, and nature.

Key features include a dynamic exterior canvas. This stunning 16 by 5 metre LED screen immerses visitors in the beautiful Mediterranean setting. Digital twins showcase Malta’s iconic structures, from Megalithic temples to the medieval city of Mdina and the UNESCO World Heritage Valletta entrance, creating a vibrant tapestry of past and present enhanced by changing light.

Ambient music complements the visuals, casting reflective ripples on the dramatic fountain entrance.

Inside, an immersive time portal in the pavilion features a 9 by 3-metre screen that creates a 180-degree storyscape of Maltese history, telling an 8,000-year saga of Malta in the Mediterranean. This narrative journey incorporates spatial audio, dramatic lighting, and advanced 3D and AI technology, showcasing the island’s evolution from an ancient crossroads to a vibrant innovation hub.

The pavilion utilises multi-modal storytelling. Wevr collaborated with the Heritage Malta to use advanced 3D photogrammetry and AI technology to recreate important moments from Malta’s history accurately. With guidance from Malta Enterprise, it also visualises a future combining renewable energy and the metaverse.

An immersive journey

“The Malta pavilion experience weaves an immersive journey that envelops visitors in the beauty and essence of Malta,” says Spiteri, who directed and produced the experience.

“By bringing key historic moments to life and offering glimpses into the future using our R&D in Generative AI and real-time 3D Unreal workflows, we’re demonstrating what tomorrow’s business and entertainment experiences look and feel like.”

Wevr’s global virtual studio, consisting of various creative teams spread across continents, partnered with Maltese historians, artists, and experts in the field. The design leverages Wevr’s ten years of experience in crafting stories and environments using Epic’s Unreal Engine, which is now further improved with proprietary Generative AI tools tailored to produce stunning immersive content.

Earlier this year, Wevr unveiled its Shared Experience Engine, marking a significant advancement in location-based entertainment.
