The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky is to undergo a major expansion with construction starting in 2021.

Wendell Strode, executive director of the National Corvette Museum, announced the plans in a presentation at the museum’s 2018 Bash event. The expansion will include new office and exhibit space, with architectural plans available next year.

The museum also plans to purchase an additional 83 hectares of land across the street from its Motorsports Park. The purchase will increase the National Corvette Museum’s total land holdings at the motorsports facility to 171 hectares.

A 2,800sqm building is to be constructed in the Motorsports Business Park in front of the complex to handle tenant recruitment and management of the facility. Strode added that condos, or “autominiums”, are also planned.

In addition, the National Corvette Museum is planning a new exhibit featuring a 1910 Buick Bug driven by Louis Chevrolet. The ‘Chevrolet Racing: Louis to Le Mans’ exhibit will also include a selection of Corvettes that have won at Le Mans.

Attendance at the museum increased to 228,744 in 2017, while 60,840 visited the motorsports park. It marked the third consecutive year of a rise in visitor numbers. Meanwhile, the museum totalled $17m in revenue for the year, along with $14.7m in expenses. Figures for the motorsports park were not as positive as it generated $1.8m in revenue but had $3.7m in expenses.
