Construction will begin this year on Shanghai’s first museum complex, according to Shanghai Daily.
The Haishang Cultural Museum Complex will bring together multiple museums and art galleries in Jiading District.
Scheduled for completion by 2020, the project will occupy 67,000 square metres.
According to Yao Qiang, Deputy Director of the District Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and TV, The Haishang Cultural Museum Complex will give visitors the opportunity to view world-class museum collections and artworks in a single visit.
The district government has already created a number of cultural venues in the district. These include the Han Tianheng Art Museum, Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre and the Jiading Library. Previously, local residents had to commute downtown to access museums and theatres.
The complex has been designed by Portuguese architect Carlos Castanheira. It has been envisioned in a minimalist style. Alongside the galleries, facilities are set to include cafes, teahouses, a calligraphy training room and a park.
