project:syntropy, creator of technology and display solutions for dome cinemas and immersive attractions, shares its top tips for choosing the right dome attraction.

project:syntropy has produced a list of insights to help operators to select the dome attraction that is right for their venue. Dome attractions are a useful tool when it comes to creating memorable shared immersive experiences for visitors and can be a great addition to theme parks, science centres and exhibition venues. They can also cater to both temporary and permanent installations.

There is an extensive library of quality content available for dome attractions on a licensing basis, meaning that even smaller venues can afford to install one. Operators can also opt for customized content and real-time interactive programming. Features such as gaming, social media integration, gesture control, device integration, augmented reality and much more are also available.

Choosing the best dome attractions

But how to select the best dome for your venue? Giulia Barbero, representative of project:syntropy, provides her three key tips:

1. Big domes are not necessarily better than smaller domes. The price of dome attractions increases exponentially in relation to the diameter of the dome screen. Therefore, sometimes it is better to create two dome attractions than a single larger one. Smaller domes can also create a more immersive effect that larger ones, thanks to their lower capacity.

For example, project:syntropy provided a 7-metre dome for Malaysia’s pavilion at Expo 2012 to create a virtual aquarium experience (pictured, top.)

2. Good projection systems will not only have a higher resolution but will also have higher brightness. Brightness is an essential characteristic, which is often considered secondary to the resolution of the image. Visitors will prefer a 4K dome with more brightness than an 8K dome projection with low brightness. 9-10 FtL is ideal for dome attractions featuring a 2D projection, and 5-6 FtL for domes in 3D projection.

Virtuality riyadh

An example of a project in which brightness was a key characteristic is the Virtuality Science Centre in Riyadh, where project:syntropy provided a 16-meter dome with high-resolution 3D-stereo projection.

3. Consider interactivity for your dome. Technological advancements allow for the creation of interactive attractions, making the experience more engaging for visitors. For instance, project:syntropy has developed a proprietary technology called SYNtouch technology. This allows for any surface to become interactive, including domes.

project:syntropy also recently celebrated the success of its Elbe Dome project in Germany. The Elbe Dome is a virtual environment providing a fully immersive experience, featuring a 4-metre high screen with a diameter of 13 metres as well as full floor projection.
