AV Stumpfl, Austrian award-winning creator of mobile and installation projection screens, multi-display and show control systems, has revealed that a PIXERA mini dual media server has been deployed at the Hong Kong Space Museum. The server is being used to deliver projection-mapped visuals for Golden Eye on the Cosmos, a new exhibition about the James Webb Space Telescope.
Golden Eye on the Cosmos, which opened in July, is a new permanent exhibition at the Hong Kong Space Museum. It highlights the unique technologies and scientific objectives of the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest infrared space telescope of all time.
The exhibition includes a model of the Webb telescope, projected images taken by the telescope’s cameras, and displays demonstrating the science of infrared astronomy.
Breathtaking projection-mapped visuals
Golden Eye on the Cosmos required a media server solution that would ensure stable video playback as well as flexible projection mapping and geometric correction capabilities. To achieve this goal, Jason Yeung and the team at Hong Kong-based system integrator CosmoVision specified a single PIXERA mini Dual server. This was used to handle all video content layering and output projection mapping, including the breathtaking projection-mapped visuals of the cosmos that are the exhibition’s showpiece.
The PIXERA mini Dual is an ultra-compact (1RU) media server for digital signage and multi-display applications and was also an excellent fit for the Space Museum.
Yeung explains: “The installation was relatively simple but the exhibition space was comparatively small, so the PIXERA mini was the perfect size to be hidden away behind the show exhibit while not compromising in terms of performance and stability.”
With restricted space available for the installation, the Christie projector used in the exhibition had to be combined with an extreme wide-angle fisheye lens, resulting in substantial distortion.
“Hence, all the image correction and warping was done within PIXERA to ensure that the content is not distorted or deformed in any way,” says Yeung, adding, “They wanted to have show control without having to involve another third-party system, which made PIXERA Control the perfect complementary show control solution to interact with other elements in the exhibition.
“As always, PIXERA provided the ideal hardware, software and support to allow us to realise this project.”
AV Stumpfl exhibited at this year’s InfoComm in Orlando, Florida, which took place from 14 – 16 June. The team presented its innovative new Flex Black PRO screen surface material and revealed new features for version 2.0 of the PIXERA media server.
