Operator Oriental Land Co. has released visitor numbers for the year for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, which show a fall in attendance for the second year in a row.

Total admissions to both Disney parks fell by 0.6 percent to a just over 30 million.  The decline in attendance was attributed to bad weather.

Meanwhile Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has hit record numbers with 14.6 million visitors in the year to the end of March, an increase of 700,000 in the prior year and a rise for the third year in a row.

Both USJ and Tokyo DisneySea celebrated their 15th anniversaries last year.

USJ’s success can be attributed to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Jurassic Park and One Piece manga/anime themed attractions.  USJ has also benefited from the Cool Japan events and attractions celebrating anime and Japanese video game brands and pop culture.

A new Nintendo themed area is due to be completed by 2020. The 50 billion Yen Super Nintendo World Japan will include state-of-the-art rides and immersive attractions as well as retail and restaurants. The addition is expected to attract another 2 to 3 million visitors annually.
