Oriental Land Co (OLC) has announced that Tokyo Disneyland‘s Space Mountain and the surrounding area in Tomorrowland will undergo a major renovation.
Space Mountain, a thrilling indoor roller coaster that sends riders flying through space, has been a popular attraction at Tokyo Disneyland since the park’s opening in 1983.
The current Space Mountain coaster will close in 2024. The JPY 56 billion ($438m) project will open in 2027. The new Space Mountain will feature ‘enhanced performance’ and immersive special effects.
“This entirely new attraction will maintain its original concept as an indoor roller coaster, but will have enhanced performance and immersive special effects that will give guests even more thrills on this exciting rocket ride,” OLC said in a press release.
The renovated Tomorrowland plaza will be inspired by a future ‘where humans are in harmony with nature’. After dark, the area will be a ‘spectacular world of light and soundscapes’.

“Guests will be able to enjoy moments of rest and relaxation in this plaza where various icons and other design elements create a sense of hope for the future,” OLC said.
Earlier this month, Tokyo Disney Resort opened the new Toy Story Hotel, immersing guests in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story films.
Highlights include guest rooms inspired by Andy’s bedroom, the Lotso Garden Cafe, and oversized Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm and Bo Peep toys.
Fantasy Springs, the eighth port at Tokyo DisneySea, is set to open in 2023. The expansion will offer three lands inspired by Frozen, Peter Pan and Tangled.
Attractions will include Rapunzel’s tower, Neverland and Arendelle Castle. OLC’s $2.2 billion Fantasy Springs development will also include a new luxury hotel.
Earlier this year, Tokyo Disney Resort revealed that Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea have welcomed a combined total of 800 million visitors since opening in 1983 and 2001.
