New immersive exhibition features inflatable artworks by 18 artists and collectives.

Rome’s Balloon Museum has opened ‘Pop Air’ at Superstudio in Milan, a new exhibition dedicated to balloons and inflatable art with playful installations and vibrant displays.

On view through 12 February, the immersive exhibition features inflatable artworks by 18 artists and collectives.

Per a press release, these artists “have all focused their research on all aspects of air: from being a tangible element of construction, an authentic sculpture of amazing monumental forms, to metaphysical and suspended atmospheres, endowed with a hazy and impalpable personality”.

One installation, ‘Airship Orchestra’ by Eness, is a collection of lively figures joining visitors for an audio experience.

Playful installations and vibrant displays

‘Silenus’ by sculptor Max Streicher is a sleeping giant who appears to breathe and move using inflatable technology.

‘Cloud Swing’ by Lindsay Glatz with Curious Form consists of three suspended swings in a luminous cloud, offering a magical experience.

Pepper’s Ghost’s ‘Aria’ is a digital interpretation of inflatable art featuring fluctuating balloons, while ‘Tholos’ by Plastique Fantastique is a tribute to ancient temples.

‘Ginjos’, created by Rub Kandy, are colourful and mysterious anthropomorphic characters. In ‘Never ending stories’ by Motorefisico, the surrounding environment changes with visitors’ movements.

‘Canopy’ by Pneuhaus and Bike Powered Events features shining tree-like sculptures that light up and expand.

In ‘Polyheadra’ by Karina Smigla-Bobinski, guests play an active role in the construction of the artwork as they assemble inflatable tubes of various sizes in an infinite number of ways.

Additional artworks to see include ‘Knot’ by Cyril Lancelin, ‘Volatile Structure’ by Geraldo Zamproni, ‘Hypercosmo’ by Hyperstudio, ‘A quiet storm’ by Quiet Ensemble, and ‘Giallo 368’ by Penique Productions.

Elsewhere, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is 25 percent complete. The new immersive attraction from teamLab is slated for completion in 2024.
