American Museum of Natural History to launch new dinosaur panel exhibition with special webinar

News
AMNH Dinosaurs Among Us

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), a major scientific and cultural institution, has announced a new digital panel exhibition called Dinosaurs Among Us, focused on one of the Museum’s greatest areas of renown and strength. To introduce this exhibition, AMNH will also be hosting a live webinar with the curator on 26 January 2023.

While most dinosaurs went extinct, birds today carry on their evolutionary legacy. The Dinosaurs Among Us exhibition will draw attention to the unbroken link between dinosaurs, who ruled the earth for around 170 million years, and modern birds. The panels depict a range of extinct dinosaurs, including both well-known and more recently discovered species, in lifelike, large-scale colour graphics.

Following huge demand for its panel shows on other topics, the team at AMNH wanted to create something accessible and customisable that would engage audiences of all ages. Ahead of the digital panel exhibition’s official launch, the institution has already received interest from across the US, as well as from organisations in Canada, Latin America and Europe.

Dinosaurs Among Us is organised by AMNH with support from the North Museum of Nature and Science in the US, the Philip J. Currie Museum in Canada, Museo de Ciencias, Universidad de Navarra in Spain and Universum Museo de las Ciencias de la UNAM in Mexico.

This exhibition was designed to be flexible and with a range of consumer requirements in mind, including highlighting regional collections, fitting into unique venues, catering to audience patterns and interests, and supporting several languages.

The panel presentation is based on a popular exhibition of the same name that was first seen at AMNH and has been designed to cater to as much or as little customisation as a venue requires. For instance, if a venue wishes to stick with the original layout, the panels are ready to be printed. Or, if a venue wants to create a presentation that is more specifically tailored to their audience and space, they are free to do so and can also incorporate local content.

The dinosaurs also come as cutouts in the digital package so the venue can exhibit them at full size if they so wish. This exhibit is also available in a bilingual Spanish/English version.

As with AMNH’s current panel exhibitions, such as the successful Microsculpture exhibition, Dinosaurs Among Us is suitable for a huge range of venues, both indoors and outdoors. This includes non-museum spaces, like shopping malls and public parks.

Dr Aki Watanabe, a research associate in Paleontology at the American Museum of History, assistant professor of Anatomy at the New York Institute of Technology, and curator of  Dinosaurs Among Us, will lead the webinar on 26 January at 11 am EST. This will feature an exhibition walkthrough and a live question-and-answer session hosted by Dr Watanabe and the sales and operations teams from AMNH’s global business development division. Last year, AMNH celebrated the success of its popular Mythic Creatures travelling exhibition at Holstebro Museum in Holstebro, Denmark. Here, the show was instrumental in helping the museum reposition itself as a place for everyone.
