Ahead of the launch of Super Nintendo World in the US, Universal Studios Hollywood has shared a look at the land’s Power-Up Band, an interactive wearable to gamify the visitor experience.
The Power-Up Band syncs with Universal Studios Hollywood‘s free app and is available to buy in six themed designs inspired by Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad and Princess Daisy.
Using these innovative wearables, guests can compete against other teams to achieve the highest score by collecting as many coins as they can.
When riding Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, visitors can tap their Power-Up Band on the ride vehicle’s steering wheel to track digital coins collected and see their ranking.

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is one of the most complex rides ever created within the theme park industry. Inspired by the Mario Kart video game series, it uses cutting-edge AR technology, projection mapping and set pieces.
Checkpoints located around Super Nintendo World will let Power-Up Band users track their status. Guests can also collect keys after winning ‘Key Challenges’. If they gather at least three, they gain access to the final boss battle with Bowser Jr.
“Think of Super Nintendo World as a life-size, living video game where you become one of the characters. You’re not just playing the game. You’re living the game, you’re living the adventure,” said Thierry Coup, senior VP and CCO at Universal Creative.
Collect coins and compete
Additionally, character meet and greets with Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach will be enhanced for visitors with a Power-Up Band.
Last week, Universal Studios Hollywood soft opened Super Nintendo World for technical rehearsals in advance of the official launch on 17 February.
Super Nintendo World made its debut at Universal Studios Japan in 2021. The immersive land is also opening as part of Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort, and at Universal Studios Singapore.
