Universal Studios Hollywood opened its new Super Nintendo World for technical rehearsals on Thursday (12 January) ahead of the official launch on 17 February.
The first Nintendo-themed land in the US was open to visitors for one day only, before annual passholder previews take place on select dates from 29 January through 11 February.
The immersive attraction is home to Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, one of the most complex rides ever created within the theme park industry.
It also features Bowser’s Castle, Peach’s Castle and Mount Beanpole, as well as the Toadstool Cafe and 1-UP Factory shop.
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is a state-of-the-art ride inspired by the Mario Kart video game series. It uses cutting-edge augmented reality (AR), projection mapping technology and set pieces.
Super Nintendo World provides many gamified experiences, with state-of-the-art technology merging the real world and video games.
Its first guests got a look at some of the land’s interactive experiences, which can be accessed via wearable wristbands linked to smartphones.

“Think of Super Nintendo World as a life-size, living video game where you become one of the characters. You’re not just playing the game. You’re living the game, you’re living the adventure,” said Thierry Coup, senior VP and CCO at Universal Creative.
Super Nintendo World first opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2021. The land is also launching as part of Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort, and in Singapore.
In Japan, it is already being expanded to include the world’s first Donkey Kong-themed area.
In more news, Universal Parks & Resorts has announced a new family-friendly theme park resort in Texas, as well as a year-round horror experience at AREA15 in Las Vegas.
