The Dallas Museum of Art has launched an international design competition for an architect-led team to reimagine its campus.
The museum is looking for a team to expand its gallery space and reorganise its internal areas, circulation and entrances. The winning group will also upgrade the existing building.
The design competition is open to local, regional, national and international firms – both emerging and established. Full details and information on how to enter can be found on the competition website.
The Dallas Museum of Art’s director Agustín Arteaga said: “With our global collection of more than 26,000 artworks from all cultures and time periods, we are one of the most iconic cultural bodies in the city of Dallas.
Reimagining the museum’s campus
“The campus was thoughtfully designed for the time with many good qualities but also presents challenges.
“Today we are no longer able to accommodate the exponential growth of our collections and are forced to keep masterworks hidden from the public due to limitations on space.
“It is time for our building to evolve to meet the current and future needs of our diverse and expansive collections and communities.”
In the first stage of the competition, architect-led multidisciplinary teams are invited to submit their approach to the project, as well as their experience and team composition.

The museum will hold a public exhibition of the concepts created by the five shortlisted teams in summer 2023, with the community able to provide feedback at that time.
Each of the shortlisted teams will receive an honorarium of $50,000 and expenses of up to $10,000 for their design work.
The deadline for the first stage is 10am on 15 March 2023. The competition’s second stage will start in spring 2023, with the winner expected to be announced in summer 2023.
“We enthusiastically welcome the addition of flexible and usable gallery space and services that can empower us to display new narratives with the global icons in our possession,” added Arteaga.
Museum seeking architect-led team
“We look forward to working with a team that will join us in our mission to be a dynamic connector where people of all cultures feel welcomed and embraced in our thriving city.”
The estimated project budget is between $150 and $175 million. The museum will launch a capital campaign later this year.
The design teams must include a lead design architect, a landscape architect, an exhibition designer, and engineering disciplines including structural, services and sustainability.
International and non-Texan teams should have a member registered to practice in the state.
