Painting with Light, a lighting and multimedia expert, has installed an innovative projection mapping system at Theater aan het Vrijthof, in Maastricht, The Netherlands.
The technology can be used for signage and to create a digital art gallery. At Theater aan het Vrijthof, it has been used to project digital artwork The Soft Atlas of Maastricht by Jan Rothuizen onto a curved wall.
This was the firm’s first installation along a curved wall. To achieve this, Painting with Light installed four 7000-lumen ceiling-mounted laser projectors. The projections had to fit together perfectly and create a single, seamless image along the Louis Derlon Foyer in the popular Maastricht arts venue.
Michiel Vanderhenst, technical project manager, Painting with Light, comments: “It’s great to try new techniques and see calculations coming out perfectly in practice, leading to a beautiful result.”
Digital art to enhance visitor experience

The project was designed to integrate the latest technologies with the theatre’s architecture to create an projected installation which would enhance the visitor experience.
Gaby van Wegberg, team manager marketing, communication and UITbalie, Theater aan het Vrijthof, says: “For the curved wall in our theatre foyer, we were looking for the possibility of projecting visuals and video on an area of 17 metres wide and 3.6 metres high, where the audience in the foyer should not be an obstacle when displaying the projection. We found a creative, skilled, and reliable partner in PWL. In the coming years, we will be working on content that contributes both to the visitor experience in the theatre itself, as well as video projection as an art form. We look forward to further cooperation with PWL.”
The signing and communications system uses the Brightsign control system so that venues can self-manage and modify the content.
Painting with Light recently created and installed a range of technologies for the QUAKE Experience in Lisbon, Portugal. The attraction utilised cutting-edge projection mapping, imaginative lighting design, and other AV systems in a 90-minute walk-through experience.
