Christie, the global visual and audio technology company, has revealed that its high-performance RGB pure laser projectors are being used in a number of giant-screen and dome theatres at Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center in Jiuquan, China.
Mogao Grottoes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to an extraordinary collection of Buddhist art. At the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center, visitors can learn about the history of the site, and gain an insight into the preservation work and research that is taking place. Four digital theatres, with two giant-screen facilities and two dome theatres, show documentary films by Dunhuang Research Academy. These enthralling HD films are screened at a resolution of 8K.
Creating cutting-edge digital theatres
The four digital theatres, which have been in use for more than ten years, have received a major renovation. The projection systems were upgraded to Christie’s cutting-edge D4K40-RGB pure laser projectors, which offer unprecedented colour reproduction, image uniformity, installation versatility, and operational longevity. As a result, the onscreen imagery is unrivalled, dramatically enhancing the viewing experience with the brightest images and most vivid colours.
Beijing Huayi Shengshi Technology, a Christie partner, installed 14 D4K40-RGB projectors. Six projectors were expertly installed in each dome theatre, measuring 18 metres (59 feet) in diameter with seating for 200 people. A D4K40-RGB projector was also strategically installed in each of the giant-screen theatres. These immense screens are 14.7-metre (48-foot) long, and 6.2-metres (20-foot) high.
Hailong Wang, project manager of Huayi Shengshi Technology, comments: “The Mogao Grottoes stand as an unparalleled repository of global Buddhist art, housing the world’s largest collection of such invaluable treasures.
“Dunhuang Research Academy’s efforts to showcase these precious artefacts through high-definition documentary films in these upgraded digital theatres are highly commendable. We are honoured to have played a pivotal role in this transformative project, dedicated to enhancing the visitor experience and sharing these historical treasures with a global audience.”
Exceptional performance
The D4K40-RGB pure laser projectors were chosen for their innovative features, which include outstanding brightness, true-to-life colours, long-lasting RGB pure laser illumination, low consumable use, and convenient long-term maintenance. Due to the project’s complexity, requiring secondary site alterations, demolition, and reconstruction, the installation and commissioning of these projectors took five months. Supporting infrastructure was also improved to enhance the performance of the projectors.
“The projection results have exceeded our expectations, and the client is pleased with the exceptional image quality and overall performance of the D4K40-RGB projectors,” adds Wang. “Upgrading to RGB pure laser projection has elevated the visual experience to a whole new level, validating the successful accomplishment of this major refurbishment project.”
April Qin, senior sales director for China, Enterprise, Christie, says: “This project exemplifies Christie’s commitment to providing advanced and reliable projection solutions that enhance audience experiences in culturally significant venues. The giant-screen and dome theatres at the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center are integral to the conservation, management, and research of the Mogao Grottoes, and Christie takes pride in contributing to their continued significance.”
The D4K40-RGB is an all-in-one, compact design with a dependable light source offering 20,000 hours of lighting performance for uninterrupted displays. It also offers a wider colour gamut that generates over 95% of the Rec. 2020 standard, providing rich, bright, true-to-life pictures.
Furthermore, the D4K40-RGB allows unrivalled options for installation thanks to its omnidirectional capabilities. It is at the cutting edge of high-brightness RGB pure laser projection technology, thanks to its energy-efficient design and Christie TruLife electronics.
Christie recently announced the release of two new RGB pure laser projectors: the M 4K15 RGB and the M 4K+15 RGB. These models join the dependable and award-winning M 4K RGB Series and can deliver 15,750 lumens. The design is suitable for use in theme park attractions, projection mapping spectacles, staging and live events, and other high-demand applications.
