Beckhoff Automation, an innovator in PC-based control technology and automation software for the entertainment and leisure industries, has shared details of how its products and technologies have been deployed at Classic Car House in Copenhagen. The museum’s new installation of a Citroën 2CV is controlled by Beckhoff drive technology and TwinCAT.

The Classic Car House museum’s collection explores selected aspects of automotive and cultural history from the 20th century, from Denmark and beyond. The museum was founded by K.W. Bruun & Co. which has been importing cars since the beginning of the 1900s and is now one of the biggest private providers. It seeks to contribute to the preservation of our common cultural heritage.

In its new installation, a meticulously restored 1965 Citroën 2CV is brought to life using a range of pulleys which enable individual sections of the vehicle to rise up and down, seemingly by magic.

Reliable & precise solutions

Beckhoff Automation, a family-owned company, creates open automation systems using PC-based control technology and fieldbus technology EtherCAT. The products and technologies are utilised in numerous industries and applications, including the entertainment sector.

The 2CV installation was designed by Kvorning Design and delivered by All Stage Production ApS. All Stage Production has extensive experience working in the entertainment sector and has been collaborating with Beckhoff for a decade. It uses Beckhoff solutions for 80% of its projects, particularly when rotation or lifting is required.

Reliable solutions are crucial in regularly lifting and moving big car parts with the highest level of precision. The solution must work flawlessly for years with low maintenance. Lars Nim Jensen, project manager at All Stage Production, chose Beckhoff as a trusted automation partner based on these factors

Jensen says: “We always know what to expect when we work with Beckhoff. What’s unique about the entertainment industry is that we only ever build one prototype for each project, which has to work immediately. This is why we always strive for maximum precision and reliability.”

The resulting system is theatrical and visually appealing, with cable drums and drives visible on the ceiling, as well as AM8000 servomotors with One Cable Technology (OCT) and AMI8100 distributed servo drives.

Beckhoff’s drive technology is dependable, small, and, in the case of the AM8000 servomotors, requires only one connection cable thanks to OCT. Beckhoff motors are also quiet, another important factor for entertainment installations.

Last month, Beckhoff Automation shared how its solutions are being used backstage in Hollywood. For example, its technology is used by Rigging in Motion, a firm that specialises in the automation of stage technology.
