Universal Destinations & Experiences is already expanding its Universal Horror Unleashed concept, with a second location now planned for Chicago.
Universal Horror Unleashed is a year-round horror experience. As well as haunted houses and immersive areas, Horror Unleashed venues will offer themed F&B and a retail location selling collectible merchandise.
The new indoor venue is coming to Chicago thanks to the city’s large population and its reputation as a leading destination for tourism and entertainment, Universal said in a press release.
Due to open in 2027, it will be located on Chicago Avenue at the Tribune Distribution Center, the former printing plant and headquarters for the Chicago Tribune.
“Universal Horror Unleashed delivers on our promise to create highly immersive and terrifying horror experiences that connect with fans year-round,” said Page Thompson, president of new ventures, Universal Destinations & Experiences.
“We’re excited to bring this bold concept to life in Chicago, a city known for its vibrant culture,” he added.
Universal’s plans to reach new audiences
“We’re grateful for the city’s support as we convert this dormant site into a unique attraction that showcases our storytelling expertise and ability to deliver mind blowing experiences that shatter guest expectations.”
Expanding the Universal Horror Unleashed brand is a key part of Universal’s wider growth strategy to reach new audiences in new markets through new and original concepts.
The company is in the midst of a major expansion, which includes the recent opening of Epic Universe in Orlando, the 2026 launch of Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, and the planned opening of its first UK theme park in 2031.
Additionally, the first Universal Horror Unleashed location is set to open in Las Vegas on 14 August.
Haunted houses at this new attraction are themed to Universal Monsters, The Exorcist: Believer (2023), an original story called Scarecrow: The Reaping, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).
