MAT Filtration Technologies, a manufacturer of high-efficiency water filtration equipment and provider of engineering services, has shared how its customised solutions allow aquariums to manage their water systems with efficiency, sustainability and reliability.
The company has developed sophisticated filtration technology to meet increasing demand. It emphasises strong collaboration with customers and undertakes extensive research on the unique requirements of various marine species to tailor the best solutions for each project.
New ideas in filtration tech
When MAT Filtration Technologies was launched, initial concepts and research were limited, but the management was determined to provide optimal solutions to meet market demands. From the outset, MAT offered a range of essential equipment, showcasing its capability and commitment to distinguishing itself from competitors.
MAT’s success stems from its dedication to innovation. The company has designed advanced filtration systems tailored to the unique needs of large-scale aquariums. This dedication goes beyond technology; MAT is also focused on fostering a cleaner and healthier habitat for marine life.
Its strategy ensures superior water quality for a balanced and thriving aquarium ecosystem. To continuously enhance processes and reduce maintenance time, MAT has developed an innovative system that provides remote client support, streamlining equipment usage and management.
Sustainability
The company aims to enhance processes to meet high standards with eco-friendly materials, using thoroughly inspected recyclable materials integrated into fabrication. Beyond choosing materials, MAT’s filtration techniques also aim to reduce water waste, promoting efficient use and full water circulation. Every piece of equipment is designed to maximise water flow and filtration effectiveness, which lessens the frequency of water replacement.
The equipment design follows the Eco-Design Principle. During this phase, the team assesses factors like energy usage, service and maintenance costs, renewal expenses, and scrap value specifically for the system. A Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) is conducted to highlight the benefits and drawbacks compared to similar systems.
Furthermore, MAT’s filtration systems utilise durable, corrosion-resistant components, ensuring long-lasting performance while minimising the need for replacements. This approach not only lowers operational costs for aquariums but also mitigates the environmental impact associated with manufacturing and disposal.
For the future, MAT is developing projects centred on sustainability, engaging local communities in various initiatives. One such endeavour involves collecting plastics to transform them into new equipment or reusable materials. The aim is to safeguard marine life comprehensively, addressing everything from external environmental influences to filtration methods used in aquariums.
MAT’s technology in action
MAT Filtration Technologies has, for over 10 years, served customers worldwide, including in Qatar, Spain, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Norway, and more. While every project is unique with different goals and needs, they all share a focus on quality.
These large aquariums demonstrate the company’s expertise. Even in cases involving massive tanks that house a variety of marine species, aquariums have turned to MAT for solutions. The implementation of MAT’s advanced filtration systems improved water clarity and quality and enhanced the overall health and vitality of the marine inhabitants.
MAT LSS was awarded the contract to provide the Life Support Systems (LSS) for the Poema del Mar Aquarium in Gran Canaria, Spain, in 2015. This state-of-the-art aquarium opened to the public in 2016 attracts hundreds of thousands of guests every year.
Across an area of12,500 square metres, the aquarium houses over 550 species, including marine mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and 2,000 plant specimens. It holds over 9 million litres of water and its ‘Deep Sea’ exhibit features the largest curved window in the world.
MAT managed the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of the Aquarium Filtration Systems (AFS) at Poema del Mar, ensuring optimal conditions for its diverse inhabitants. Renowned as one of Europe’s most stunning venues, the aquarium’s marine displays captivate visitors of all ages.
In partnership with the Loro Parque Foundation, the aquarium emphasises Atlantic marine conservation and participates in projects across 30 countries. Engaging in a project with a robust dedication to environmental protection aligns with MAT’s mission of conserving programs and protecting marine life. Another impressive showcase from the same group and the MAT team is the Pygmy Hippopotamus exhibit at Loro Parque, where MAT served as the ALSS provider.
Looking ahead
MAT Filtration Technologies is fully committed to the future and the developments to come. This year, the company revealed a new partnership with PCP (Pragma Capital Partners) to enhance its global financial strategy. Additionally, collaboration with Bureau Veritas will improve quality processes, ensuring rigorous quality inspections throughout every phase of equipment production.
Looking ahead, MAT has numerous expectations and strategies focused on sustainability and ongoing innovation to meet customer needs. The well-being of marine life is a priority for MAT, along with maintaining top quality standards. By providing efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly solutions, MAT is fostering healthier aquatic environments and promoting the sustainability of public aquariums and marine research facilities globally.
Earlier this month, MAT Filtration Technologies, reflected on the success of its collaboration with SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, which has now been open for over 18 months.
