Modulo Pi media servers drive interactive immersive experience at La Clusaz Ski Resort

Modulo Pi, a provider of media server solutions with a user-friendly design, has provided its Modulo Kinetic media server solution to La Clusaz’s Beau Regard Station in the French Alps, for the immersive experience, Libertaz.

Powered by Modulo Pi’s technology and designed by Superbien with AV integration and real-time programming by ID Scènes, the show combines visual art, sound, light, and interactivity in a multi-sensory journey into the alpine imagination.

Reimagining the mountain experience

The alpine commune of La Clusaz has developed its new immersive space at the Beau Regard Station to help diversify its activities in response to climate change.

This project is part of the resort’s wider work to expand its offerings beyond skiing and reimagine the mountain experience. It was initiated by SATELC, with artistic direction, graphic design, and part of the interactive content led by Superbien. AV integration and real-time programming were managed by ID Scènes, with the unique soundtrack composed by Studio 31dB.

The resulting 360-degree experience spans 200 square metres and invites guests to journey through four immersive scenes that take inspiration from the alpine environment.

The experience space was created at the base of the slopes, and turns an area that usually provides overnight storage for the station lift’s 40 gondola cabins into a venue for the joyful, immersive sensory show.

Serving as both a technical facility and an immersive venue, the space’s dual purpose posed one of the most significant challenges for the project.

Quentin Grêlé, media server operator and graphic designer at ID Scènes, says: “The room had to remain fully flexible. In the event of strong winds or heavy snow, the gondolas need to be brought inside at any time. The whole system had to coexist with this logistical constraint while remaining reliable, even in potentially very cold conditions.”

Automated, intuitive technology

To provide a playful experience, the eight-minute show brings together pre-rendered visuals with real-time interactive sequences. During the pre-show, each guest activates a particle system that follows their movements across the immersive space. Another sequence transforms the entire room into a snow-covered landscape, where guests’ gestures slowly reveal projected textures across the walls and floor.

“The tracking system is based on a 3D LiDAR sensor from Ouster for the floor, and a Hokuyo UST-20LX 2D LiDAR for each wall. The interactivity is smooth, responsive, and designed to work even with a full audience,” says Grêlé.

Modulo Kinetic media servers by Modulo Pi handle media playback, interactivity, and show control. The venue’s system consists of a Kinetic Designer workstation and two V-Node servers, each with 6 outputs and HDMI input cards for event-based configuration. Three Epson EB-PU1007 video projectors are powered by the media servers and aligned using Modulo Kinetic’s integrated warping and blending tools.

Modulo Pi’s media server and its cutting-edge features, including support for 2D and 3D LiDAR sensors, particle engine, real-time timelines, and a node-based programming editor, enable the interactive sequences. The whole installation is completely automated, with a bespoke control interface built in Kinetic Designer. This enables staff to run the experience independently. The space has an optimal session capacity of 35 guests, with a maximum of 50 guests.

Grêlé says: “We created a highly intuitive interface to manage everything — launching the show, adjusting start times, monitoring capacity… We even included an HDMI insert system for events, with a ready-to-use PowerPoint template.”

Libertaz received very positive responses when it first launched in the spring. Reopening this summer, the innovative, sustainable initiative continues in its mission to promote the region.

The project team includes:
Client: La Clusaz SATELC
Art direction and graphic design: Superbien
AV setup: ID Scènes
Interactivity: ID Scènes & Superbien

Last month, Modulo Pi shared details of a project at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco. Launching on 29 March 2025, the “Mediterranean 2050” exhibition invites audiences on a journey through space and time into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, showcasing its vibrant ecosystem while enhancing awareness of the environmental challenges it faces both now and in the future.
