Sarner International, a leading experiential design expert, has been appointed to lead the planning and design of a new visitor centre at the Muskau Arch, a German-Polish UNESCO Geopark site recognised globally for its outstanding geological and cultural importance.
This ambitious multimillion-euro project aims to establish a world-class immersive edutainment venue that beautifully integrates innovative storytelling, interactive displays, and immersive experiences. It will vividly showcase the region’s diverse natural landscapes, geological marvels, and its socio-economic and industrial heritage.
The project is led and will be operated by the ‘Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau’ Foundation.
Three core narratives
Central to this project is a newly designed visitor centre, seamlessly integrated within the Muskauer Faltenbogen nature reserve.
Spanning the historic Kavalierhaus and a newly built extension designed to harmonise with the local environment, this world-class edutainment attraction will vividly showcase the region’s history, inviting visitors on an engaging journey through time—ranging from the glacial tectonic movements of the Ice Age to today’s pressing issues of climate change and energy transformation.
A compelling storytelling approach drives the exhibition, centred around three core narratives.
The first explores the region’s history, from its geological origins to its subsequent industrial and cultural development. It highlights how natural forces laid the groundwork for centuries of economic and social development. The distinct geology of the Muskauer Faltenbogen is shown to have influenced industrialisation, resulting in the growth of lignite mining, fostering the expansion of the glass industry, and initiating structural changes that still characterise the region today.
The second examines change and disruption, emphasising the significant shifts in climate, economy, and industry that have consistently reshaped both the landscape and human life.
The third section presents the Anthropocene concept, highlighting how human actions have fundamentally altered the Earth, from industrialisation and resource extraction to contemporary environmental challenges. It situates the Muskauer Faltenbogen within the global conversation on sustainability and climate action, highlighting the fragile balance between progress and preservation, along with the urgent need for creative solutions to ensure a sustainable future.
Education, entertainment & sustainability
This project combines education, entertainment, and sustainability, making the UNESCO Global Geopark Muskauer Faltenbogen a must-see for all ages.
Set to open in 2028, this groundbreaking centre will provide an engaging, multi-sensory environment that combines interactive exhibits, immersive storytelling, and advanced technology. It aims to foster reflection on the ongoing changes influencing our world and emphasises the essential role of sustainability and innovation in safeguarding this extraordinary landscape for future generations.
This project builds on Sarner’s extensive body of work, which examines the intricate connection between humanity and the natural environment, fostering a greater appreciation for both nature and history.
Recent projects include the Norwegian Nature Centre and Norwegian Glacier Museum in Norway, the Wetterextreme Immersive Experience at Klimahaus Bremerhaven in Germany, and a natural history-themed immersive exhibition conceptualised for BBC Studios.
