Happy Earth Day: One thing you can do to take climate action now

climate action #1 measure - greenloop blooloop

Wondering where to start on taking climate action? Measuring your carbon footprint is the first step.

It’s hard to know where to start as an organisation trying to play a part in tackling climate change.

As we wrap up after greenloop 22, we have one clear message that we would like to share with you.

The first step is to start to measure the carbon footprint of your organisation. This may sound difficult, time consuming and potentially expensive, but actually there is a lot of help and support available. And it will give you a competitive advantage.

Climate Neutral Now

At greenloop we heard from Miguel Naranjo, Programme Officer for Global Climate Action at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.

Climate Neutral Now is the UN’s initiative to support organisations to act now in order to achieve a climate neutral world by 2050 as set out in the Paris Agreement.

An organisation can become a participant by signing the Climate Neutral Now Pledge, following the three steps (Measure, Reduce, Offset) and reporting on its actions and achievements annually.

All the information and toolkits on the website are completely free and there is free support from the UN to help you complete the measurement phase.

Other help

There are also consultancies that can help you measure your carbon footprint if you feel you need more support. An advantage of working with a consultancy is that they can provide verification of your calculations which you can then use for certification.

Blooloop has recently been certified as carbon neutral. We worked with Planet Mark to measure our Scope 1 & 2 emissions and create our carbon reduction plan. Where further reductions were not possible, Blooloop purchased and retired the necessary carbon credits through Gold Standard Marketplace.

Blooloop is committed to playing its part in contributing to global climate action and has signed up to the SME Climate Hub and is also part of the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative. Our next step is to start to look at our Scope 3 emissions as we make a plan to go beyond carbon neutral and become climate neutral.

We found that looking at Scope 1 & 2 emissions first was a good entry point into the process of assessing and reducing our whole climate footprint.

Planet Mark have offered a discount to Blooloop clients and greenloop attendees who join them. Please contact Eva (Eva.Koszorus@planetmark.com) to find out more.

Blooloop will be starting to fill out our own Climate Neutral Now return over the next few weeks. If anyone else would like to join us in an informal group to share information and resources please do get in touch with Ruth at ruth.read@blooloop.com.

Supporting climate charities

Blooloop has donated £500 to EARTHDAY’s tree planting Canopy Project, and £1000 to Project Seagrass, from our greenloop conference proceeds.
