Cloward H2O, an expert in aquatic design, partnered with Cass Calder Architecture and EDSA to engineer and design a unique water feature for The Aarid project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This new development, spanning 3.3 hectares, seamlessly integrates residential, commercial, educational, medical, and recreational spaces into a dynamic lifestyle destination.
The focal point of this large-scale project is an interesting water element that has been carefully planned to improve the development’s overall comfort and beauty. Spanning over 18,000 square feet, it serves as the focal point of the retail complex. Inspired by elaborate canals, it boasts imposing two-story waterfalls at the entrance, 30-foot cascading water towers, a 6-foot diameter acrylic sphere, and unique seating oases within the water, all of which combine to create a tranquil atmosphere for guests.
Cloward H2O, Cass Calder Architecture, and EDSA created this striking water element. This partnership project adds elegance and helps mitigate the region’s hot and arid atmosphere, as the water feature naturally cools the area.
However, there are challenges in introducing such a large water feature in this dry environment, the main one being water conservation. The project team set out on an ambitious mission to achieve a harmonious balance between luxury and sustainability, realising the need for responsible water management.
A sustainable approach
The Aarid project’s water element shows how design and engineering can deliver climate-friendly solutions. The waterfalls create a relaxing atmosphere and humidify the air, minimising the need for energy-intensive air conditioning, and the water towers spray fine mists that cool the air and combat harsh weather.
Cloward H2O used creative methods to tackle the problem of water conservation. In order to minimise waste and maximise the use of water resources, a well-planned water recycling system collects and filters runoff and surplus water. Effective water circulation and conservation are guaranteed by contemporary, energy-efficient pumps and filtration systems.
Furthermore, water usage is reduced by using native, drought-resistant plant species in landscaping, which is consistent with sustainability objectives. The use of rainwater harvesting systems ensures that every drop is utilised for the benefit of the development as a whole, supporting conservation efforts even further.
Engineering solutions
The water features demonstrate Cloward H2O’s rigorous engineering approach. With a water capacity of about 900 cubic meters, the canal is intended to maintain high standards of water quality appropriate for leisure activities.
The system’s carefully positioned surface returns and drains help with circulation and the removal of waste and pollutants. Good quality pumps, particularly Herborner Vertical pumps (Series X), with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and high-end efficiency motors, minimise the amount of space needed for mechanical equipment and maximise operating power requirements.
The detailed design guarantees that the aquatic features satisfy aesthetic aims and comply with strict public health regulations.
The design vision
EDSA did the landscape for this project and Cass Calder worked on the building architecture. The innovative design approach creates a lively mixed-use development that combines different areas into a unified destination for lifestyles. Along with extensive ground-level landscaping for a contemporary aesthetic, the project includes a number of pathways, bridges, and plazas that mix in with the wadi edge conditions that naturally exist. The water feature is encircled by a sculptural plaza, a green wooded canopy, a rock garden, and retail and recreational options.
When finished, the development will include a family entertainment facility, main street anchors, restaurants, smaller retail establishments, and kiosks. EDSA’s master planning and detailed design address vehicle and pedestrian streetscape corridors, entry gateways, inner courtyards, and garden areas, creating an engaging environment for all.
The Aarid project shows how creative minds may work together to solve environmental problems while building attractive and usable environments. Cloward H2O, Cass Calder Architecture, and EDSA created a water element that goes beyond aesthetics. This feature addresses climate mitigation and water conservation in a hot and arid climate, demonstrating responsible design and engineering. It shows what can be achieved when beauty and sustainability coexist under the harshest conditions.
Earlier this year, Cloward H2O shared insights into three different types of pool structures: concrete, stainless steel, and fibreglass. Rob Cloward, associate principal and senior engineer at Cloward H2O, discussed the pros and cons of each material and considered their suitability for various applications.
