A developer wants to transform the old Stanley Mines property in Clear Creek County, Colorado into an adventure park with thrill rides and educational exhibits.
The $15m project would transform the 16-hectare former mine site into The Stanley Mines Adventure Park. Bruce Russell is leading the development, with help from former mine engineer Ben Miller, who also worked on the mine drop ride at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
The educational exhibits would focus on the mining history of the site.
“We’re building on that historic core – it’s fun, it’s a very exciting kind of project,” Russell said.
Proposed rides include an alpine coaster, aerial tram, mine shaft drop ride, zip line and a range of family friendly attractions. The park would also have a restaurant, beer garden and event space.
The mine was last used in the 1980s and has since been closed to the public. The original buildings on the site would be preserved and repurposed for the park while several new buildings would be added.
For work to begin the property must first be rezoned from a mining district to a commercial tourism and recreation district. The Clear Creek County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposal on 16 May followed by another hearing by the Board of County Commissioners in June before any action will be taken.
Construction is expected to take three to five years with several phases. The first phase could be ready to open in the second half of 2019.
