London’s Vagina Museum, the world’s first museum dedicated to the vulva, is closing this week after being asked to leave the premises in Bethnal Green.
The Vagina Museum opened in Bethnal Green in March last year after relocating from Camden Market.
In a statement, the museum announced the “sad news” and confirmed that it has received notice to vacate the premises “by the end of this week”.
“As a property guardianship, we’ve always been aware that we may be asked to leave with very short notice,” the statement says. “We’re disappointed that it has come so soon.”
The museum is looking for a new home. Until a site is found, it will “continue to operate in the digital world”.
The Vagina Museum launched in 2017 with pop-up exhibitions and events across the UK. It opened in Camden Market in 2019 with an exhibition titled ‘Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them’.
In Bethnal Green, the Vagina Museum hosted exhibitions titled ‘Periods: A Brief History’ and ‘From A to V’.
“We’re sad about this development, but incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished in the 10 months we’ve been at our Bethnal Green premises,” the statement adds.

“We’ve welcomed more than 40,000 visitors through our doors, and received so much love and positive feedback. We’ve demonstrated just how much the world needs and wants a Vagina Museum.”
The Vagina Museum is appealing for donations and help in finding new premises, which it plans to transform into “a thriving heart of a community”.
“Times are, once again, uncertain for us, but we’ve been through this before and risen stronger than ever,” the museum’s statement says.
Meanwhile, the Museum of Sex is coming to Miami. The NYC attraction’s newest and largest outpost will open in Florida in spring 2023.
