Environmentally-conscious practices make a big difference for showgoers

SSA Group, an award-winning provider of visitor amenities, has returned to a major farming event, marking half a century of its support for the Denver event.

Every January, the National Western Stock Show hosts a cattle, rodeo, and horse show for 16 days. For the past 50 years, SSA has collaborated with the National Western Stock Show to support food service, catering, and retail products.

The firm engaged some of its sustainable initiatives for culinary operations, helping minimise environmental impact. The majority of the catered events during the Stock Show used reusable serving ware, reducing landfill waste.

Environmental initiatives

Using r.Cup’s returnable cup model, SSA Group removed 234 single-use plastic throwaway cups at the Boots n’ Business event.

r.Cup was voted as the Most Innovative Food & Beverage Reuse Company last year in The Reusies, which celebrates the pioneers and game-changers who are developing alternatives to throw-away products.

Over 80% of the lettuce sold at the Stock Show was grown at Kalera, a vertical hydroponic farm based 11 kilometres from the National Western Complex where the event was hosted.

Reducing the number of kilometres the food must travel, has directly impacted the carbon footprint, as well as reducing the amount of water needed to grow the lettuce, and pesticides required, ultimately improving the product’s shelf life.

Through a partnership with We Don’t Waste, SSA Group helped save 1,700 portions of edible food, which were delivered to those in need through Denver community-based organisations.

More information on the event can be found on the National Western Stock Show website.

SSA Group recently announced it was partnering with Attractions.io, a leading creator of mobile visitor apps, bringing fully digital experiences to cultural attraction guests in 2023.
