Valumia, a supply-chain intelligence platform developed in Europe that helps companies gain clear visibility into environmental, operational, social, and governance risks across their supplier networks, has announced that founder M. Verónica Celis Vergara is launching Paper Trail.
This workshop is a facilitated session on sustainability and business risks for the attractions industry. It uses a hands-on, card-based simulation to help teams explore how decisions about investment, procurement, operations, supply chains, reputation, and resilience are interconnected.
In Paper Trail, players assume roles such as investors, park operators, suppliers, and a public voice. Their shared goal is to finance and develop a new amusement park while keeping the system resilient.
Throughout the workshop, they invest in solutions, negotiate, respond to external challenges, and balance personal goals with the project's long-term success. Structural choices can reinforce the system, whereas tactical shortcuts might speed up progress but increase hidden risks.
If fragility becomes too high, the entire investment risks collapse.
Decisions with consequences
Instead of teaching sustainability via presentations or checklists, Paper Trail transforms it into decision-making with tangible consequences.
The simulation shows how a choice in one project area can quickly affect another: an investment can affect procurement; procurement can introduce operational risks; and short-term decisions may lead to reputational, financial, or resilience challenges.
Thus, collaboration is shown not just as an ideal, but as a practical factor that can significantly alter the project's future.
Paper Trail was initially tested with students at Breda University of Applied Sciences and has been further developed through sessions with startup founders, managers, and other professionals.
Each session has helped refine the format, especially in areas like negotiation, hidden vulnerabilities, and how different roles respond to the same challenges.
Participants experienced Paper Trail during IAAPA Sustainability Day ahead of IAAPA Expo Europe 2026
Recently, several attractions-industry participants experienced Paper Trail during IAAPA Sustainability Day in London on 21 September 2026. The session was highly praised and sparked meaningful discussions about trade-offs, collaboration, and the impacts of short-term decisions.
The challenge structure draws inspiration from the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), especially its Principal Adverse Impacts framework.
Rather than presenting these ideas as regulatory theory, the game embeds them in scenarios players must manage during gameplay, alongside common issues like capital allocation, supplier relationships, operating costs, public scrutiny, and guest experience.
Sessions now available
Paper Trail is now offered as a facilitated workshop led by Celis Vergara, suitable for companies, leadership teams, procurement and supply-chain groups, sustainability teams, industry associations, and educational institutions.
The sessions can be customised for various audiences, using the game as a foundation to spark practical discussions on sustainability, due diligence, collaboration, supply-chain risks, and organisational resilience.
