Toutatis coaster at Parc Asterix

New coaster sets a world record with 23 airtime moments

Intamin, a creator of record-breaking amusement rides, has launched a world record-breaking roller coaster at Parc Astérix, France.

Toutatis opened on 8 April 2023 and is the park’s new showstopper. Not only is it France’s fastest multi-launch coaster, but with 23 airtimes, it also boasts the world record for airtimes on a steel coaster.

The roller coaster is part of the new Festival Toutatis attraction at Parc Astérix, which is themed as a Gallic Festival. Using high-quality scenography, this area describes a Gallic celebration of the God Toutatis, set in the depths of the Forest of Carnutes.

Record-breaking coaster technology

Intamin has created this unique coaster using the strongest Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) launch system on the market. Toutatis uses seven LSM launches, two of which are in reverse, with over 1100 meters of physical track and a ride length of nearly 1400 meters.

Riders will experience a top speed of around 110km/h, a climb up to 51m high, and a record-breaking 23 airtime moments on this adrenaline-inducing coaster. 32 elements and an impressive layout mean that the ride is full of surprises as riders enter the realm of Asterix and Obelix.

The ride can accommodate 60 riders in three 20-seater, themed trains. Passenger safety is ensured through ergonomically shaped seats and over-the-shoulder lap bars, which also provide a comfortable ride with a sense of freedom.

Last October, Intamin announced the addition of a new vertical launch roller coaster element. Using one of the market’s strongest LSM launches, guests can now be propelled towards the sky with powerful linear synchronous motors. The vertical launch provides an experience similar to that experienced by astronauts thanks to a state-of-the-art, customisable system which is designed for high speeds and accelerations.

Recent innovations also include a flying theatre-type ride. Intamin’s Motion Tower concept offers guests an immersive experience with an uninterrupted view of the screen. The system’s gondola can move in three degrees of freedom (3DOF) and can be programmed to synchronise with different media content.
