Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in Florida has started building the new Manatee River habitat and VyStar SkyScape entrance, both part of the ‘Rezoovenation’ project.
An innovative facility for manatees receiving treatment at the zoo, Manatee River is an expansion of the existing manatee care centre.
It will include four new treatment pools and three habitats, therefore tripling the zoo’s rehabilitation efforts with 330,000 gallons of space.
The upcoming habitat is inspired by the diverse natural environment of North Florida, replicating the state’s waterways and incorporating native fish, reptiles and birds.
‘Rezoovenation’ improvement plan

“We are excited to officially break ground on this incredible new facility, which will position our zoo and gardens as an industry leader in manatee rehabilitation,” said president and CEO Jeff Ettling.
“It is crucial to deliver prompt and expert treatment to safeguard wild populations of Florida manatees, and we are grateful for the generous support of J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver, whose lead gift has been essential in making this vision a reality.”
As well as the manatee habitat, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has started constructing the 25,000 square-foot VyStar SkyScape, a new entrance for admissions, guest relations, retail and F&B.
In addition to interactive elements and educational displays, VyStar SkyScape will include a stage, a VIP lounge, and meeting spaces.

The Rezoovenation plan includes other proposed improvements, such as a new education campus, an immersive lion habitat, and a reimagined elephant habitat.
The zoo has expanded its fundraising goal from $52 million to $70m due to the increasing cost of supplies. So far, it has raised 66 percent of the $70m.
The new entrance and manatee habitat are the second phase of the Rezoovenation plan and are expected to be completed by fall 2025.
