IAAPA, the global association for the attractions industry, has released the first attractions industry economic analysis for the Middle East region including a number of African countries. This extensive report provides insight into the transformative impact that attractions have on the economy.

The study was commissioned by IAAPA and undertaken by Tourism Economics in 2023, with data compiled from 2022.

‘Resilience & potential’

The research reviewed data from 15 countries across the region and included a wide range of attractions such as amusement and theme parks, water parks, family entertainment centres (FEC), zoos and aquariums, museums and science centres, and historical, cultural, and natural attractions.

It revealed three significant findings that highlight the industry’s economic impact and potential for further development.

  • Revenue generation. Attractions in the Middle East and some regions of Africa brought in $24.3bn in total income. This revenue drives the expansion of the industry and is a major contributor to the region’s overall economic landscape.
  • Job creation. According to the research, the attractions sector supports approximately 565,000 jobs, making it a major employer. The sector plays a critical role in providing livelihoods and opportunities for people throughout the region, from direct employment at attractions to indirect and induced effects across associated industries.
  • Tax contribution. The attractions sector made tax payments totalling around $2.5bn over the research period. This significant tax contribution highlights how the industry supports the development of infrastructure and public services, strengthening the socioeconomic foundation of the Middle East and Africa.

Peter Van Der Schans, VP and executive director at IAAPA EMEA, says: “The results of our study underscore the resilience and potential of the attractions industry in the Middle East and parts of Africa. As we navigate through dynamic global landscapes, it is crucial to recognize the substantial economic contributions of attractions, particularly in terms of revenue generation, job creation, and tax contributions.”

One of the numerous benefits of IAAPA membership is the economic impact research conducted in all of its regions. In addition to access to the latest research, the benefits include educational seminars, expos, advocacy activities, safety standards, and vast networking possibilities, which make it the leading platform for professionals in the sector.

Earlier this month, IAAPA shared some of the key issues to be addressed at IAAPA Expo Asia 2024, on the theme Shape Your Evolution at IAAPA Expo Asia: Evolve your business into a leading market player. The event is being held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand from 27 to 30 May.
