Merlin Entertainments has partnered with Coca-Cola for a third year to encourage recycling via reverse vending machines at its UK attractions.
Through the incentivised initiative, which runs until 6 September, guests can win VIP experiences by recycling an empty 500ml plastic bottle at one of 28 reverse vending machines at 11 Merlin attractions.
Participating sites are Alton Towers, Legoland Windsor, Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures, Warwick Castle, Sea Life aquariums in Blackpool, Brighton and London, the Blackpool Tower, and Birmingham’s Legoland Discovery Centre.
This year, the innovative vending machines feature a colourful new look. Additionally, there are four extra machines for the 2024 project.

“Plastic waste is a pressing environmental issue, and at Merlin, we are dedicated to raising awareness, and implementing effective and measurable solutions,” said Dare Ilori, group sustainability director at Merlin.
Merlin, he said, is “proud to inspire and educate our guests on the importance of reducing, returning and recycling plastic waste”.
Vending machines can be located by asking staff members at each attraction, or by using the attraction’s app. Guests can enter the competition on a website printed on a receipt after recycling.
This year’s prizes include a VIP behind-the-scenes tour of Warwick Castle’s ‘Legend of the Trebuchet’ show, and a 127-foot climb of The Swarm coaster at Thorpe Park.
“We share Merlin’s passion for entertainment, and goals for sustainability,” said Elodie Peribere, marketing director at Coca-Cola Great Britain.
Merlin’s sustainability strategy
Merlin’s sustainability initiatives include introducing edible straws and installing EV charging points at its UK sites.
“Together, we are committed to fostering a sustainable future and safeguarding our planet,” Ilori added.
In April, Ilori took part in the greenloop sustainability conference – his third appearance at the annual event for the attractions sector.
He later spoke to blooloop about Scope 3 measurements, carbon neutral operations, and ‘solution opportunities’.
