Disney says the “plans are drawn” and “dirt is moving”

Walt Disney World in Florida is getting new lands and attractions based on villains, Monsters, Inc., Encanto and Indiana Jones, as announced at this year’s D23, Disney’s fan event.

“At Disney Experiences, Imagineers dream, create, design and build these stories into real places,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney’s theme parks and experiences division, at the expo-style-event over the weekend.

“And we have Imagineers in place right now all around the world because everything we’re going to share with you is in active development. Plans are drawn. Dirt is moving. I just want to be clear about this: we are doing everything you’re going to hear tonight.”

Starting with the new villains land at Magic Kingdom, Disney has announced something to rival the Universal classic monsters coming to Epic Universe.

Construction on the villains land is set to start soon, with Walt Disney Imagineering creating it now. The land, part of a major Magic Kingdom expansion, will contain two new attractions, as well as retail and dining experiences.

“Since the beginning, our Disney villains have given us endless possibilities to tell new stories,” D’Amaro said. “In this new land, you’ll see storytelling on a grand scale that only Disney can deliver.”

Magic Kingdom is also getting two new Cars attractions in a reimagined section of Frontierland. Construction is due to start next year.

“As we develop the next generation of Disney Experiences, we’re always looking for new ways to tell the stories people love,” D’Amaro said. “We’re thrilling Cars fans by building on this incredibly successful franchise and creating the next chapter in this story.”

Over at Animal Kingdom, a new land called Tropical Americas is themed to a fictional village in the heart of the rainforest. There will be a new Indiana Jones attraction, which takes place inside a mysterious Maya temple.

Additionally, the 11-acre land will include the first ride-through Encanto attraction at a Disney park. Tropical Americas is set to open in 2027.

“With Tropical Americas, we’re bringing huge projects to life for generations of fans,” D’Amaro said. “This is the type of signature storytelling that our Disney Imagineers have been creating for 70 years.”

Finally, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is to offer a new land inspired by Pixar franchise Monsters, Inc. In this land will be Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster. Construction starts next year.

“The power of friendship and laughter is at the heart of so many Disney stories – especially Monsters, Inc.,” D’Amaro added. “Now we’re giving fans a whole new way to experience this world in a Disney theme park and connect with the characters they love.”
