The world’s first Donkey Kong Country opens soon

Universal Studios Japan has announced an opening date for the world’s first Donkey Kong Country expansion at Super Nintendo World.

Donkey Kong Country is opening to guests on 11 December. Visitors will feel like they are playing inside the arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981.

Highlights in the new area include interactive experiences, themed retail and F&B, and the new ‘Mine Cart Madness’ coaster. This is located inside the iconic Golden Temple, which features as a level in Donkey Kong video games.

The coaster is an innovative attraction developed in partnership with Nintendo’s creative team, including Nintendo game developer Shigeru Miyamoto.

On Mine Cart Madness, guests will board a mine cart and race through the jungle as they help Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong to protect the Golden Banana from the Tiki Tak Tribe.

The attraction boasts an unprecedented ride system and a unique coaster design, offering jaw-dropping manoeuvres like getting blasted out of a barrel and seemingly jumping over gaps in the track.

Daniel Greer, show producer at Universal Creative, said: “In Donkey Kong Country, visitors can immerse themselves in the lush tropical landscapes seen in the popular video game series and explore real-life locations deep in the jungle, including the Golden Temple.

“The new ride attraction, Mine Cart Madness, is a new and innovative coaster design that is not bound by conventional ideas and will offer an unpredictable experience that will make you seemingly jump over gaps.

Innovative experiences at Universal Studios Japan

“We are looking forward to welcoming our guests to ‘play wild’ with a thrilling and ultra-exciting experience that is both visually and instinctively stimulating.”

With the addition of the new Donkey Kong area, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan is growing by 70 percent.

Super Nintendo World first launched at Universal Studios Japan in 2021. The land opened at Universal Studios Hollywood last year. It is also heading to Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort, as well as Universal Studios Singapore.
