Walt Disney Imagineering has teased the new Monsters, Inc. coaster coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at SXSW.
As revealed at last year’s D23 fan event, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is getting a new land called Monstropolis inspired by Pixar franchise Monsters, Inc.
At the 2025 South by Southwest event, Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen spoke about the immersive land and coaster, via a Disney blog post.
Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster recreates the door vault scene from the film.
“Imagineers have been itching to turn that moment into an attraction ever since we saw it for the first time,” Hundgen said.
In addition to being Disney’s first suspended coaster, the new ride features the first-ever vertical lift in a Disney park.
At SXSW, Docter and Hundgen revealed that guests will board the ride vehicle before being lifted into the air to zoom into the door vault for “an experience that’s as memorable and fun as the film,” Hundgen said.

“I can tell you that everyone at Pixar is excited about how this is coming together,” Docter added. “It really is like a dream come true for us.”
Hundgen said of the new attraction: “We have never done anything like this before.
“It’s Disney’s first suspended coaster, it’s our first vertical lift. We’re designing this experience to be as memorable and as fun as the film itself.”
Docter said the Pixar team has been working with Imagineering “for a long time creating these incredible experiences, all over the world”.
“We’re such fans of the Disney parks, we even use them as a sort of test for ourselves,” he said.
“When we’re coming up with the sets and environments, we ask ourselves, ‘Is this somewhere I’d want to go if they built it at Disneyland?'”
Earlier this year, Disney World announced a closing date for Muppet*Vision 3D to make room for its new Monsters, Inc. land.
