New attractions are part of the ‘Remaking Beamish’ project

Beamish Museum in County Durham has announced a series of new attractions for this year, including a recreated cinema, a toy shop, and a tavern.

The museum’s new exhibits are part of the ‘Remaking Beamish’ project, the biggest development in Beamish’s history.

In the recreation of The Grand cinema from Ryhope in Sunderland, guests will experience a trip to the pictures in the 1950s.

Also opening alongside the cinema in the 1950s area of Beamish are a toy shop named after the Romer Parrish store in Middlesbrough, and an electrical shop and repair workshop.

In the 1820s area, the Drovers’ Tavern will open. Here, guests will find Georgian-inspired food and drinks. Additionally, visitors will soon get to spend the night at Beamish in Georgian workers cottages.

As well as the new exhibits, Beamish is offering many events throughout 2024, including the Cinderella pantomime (opening 11 February), an International Women’s Day event (8 and 10 March), a science-themed weekend (16 and 17 March), and Easter experiences (29 March until 1 April).

May Day celebrations will be held on 5 and 6 May, followed by the Horses in Harness event on 8 and 9 June. The North East Horticultural Society’s annual show takes place on 7 and 8 September, and there will be autumnal celebrations on 5 and 6 October.

Events at Beamish in 2024

Beamish will end the year with a festive programme from 23 November through 24 December, and Twelfth Night celebrations from 27 December to 5 January 2025.

“We have an incredible line-up of events for 2024, including everything from pantomime performances to traditional transport,” said Paul Foster, Beamish’s events manager.

“No matter what your interest, you’re sure to find something incredible to see and do at Beamish this year, and we can’t wait to have everyone come and join us for what is sure to be an unmissable year at the museum.”
