Event, the experience design agency, recently delivered a visitor experience masterplan for the science centre, which will relocate to a new, state-of-the-art building in Jurong Lake Gardens, Singapore.
The Event team has been working on the masterplan throughout 2022, alongside the Science Centre team, collaborating closely to define the visitor experience both within the new building and across the outdoor activity spaces.
The visitor experience masterplan was critical for the client in finalising this phase of the project, and since the finished plan was delivered, Science Centre Singapore has announced that the new venue will open in 2027. This coincides with the attraction’s 50th anniversary and also aligns with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
“Our masterplan promises to bring together innovative technology and creative storytelling to create immersive learning experiences that inspire and enlighten visitors in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” says a statement from Event.
The Science Centre Singapore’s future ambitions
The team’s ambition for the newly reimagined exhibition spaces is to use innovative technology and creative storytelling to create immersive and enriching learning experiences.
The new Science Centre will boast a network of discovery and sensory trails that will stretch through approximately 16,000m2 of exhibition space. For younger visitors, there will be a dedicated Children’s Gallery, more than twice the size of the existing centre’s Children’s Gallery, and an interactive outdoor water activity space. Older students will enjoy experimental learning spaces, hands-on workshops and a new observatory. There will also be a new and improved programme of ‘after-dark’ activities.
“Our ambition for the new Science Centre is to be a truly rewarding destination for all ages and abilities,” says Lim Tit Meng, chief executive of the Science Centre’s Board.
“The universal design principles of the new building will facilitate equal opportunities for all visitors, regardless of demographic or learning abilities. We have also been experimenting with new programs and exhibition formats at the current site, taking note of the best practices we can apply to provide enhanced experiences to our audiences.”
A new location for Science Centre Singapore
Images of the new lakeside building have also been released this week by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), which is part of the competition-winning multidisciplinary bid to design the new science centre, led by local firm Architects 61.
The building aims to gain BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification through green design principles and energy performance strategies. By choosing the right building management systems, as well as using photovoltaic arrays and smart ventilation strategies, the design reduces energy consumption by up to 40%.
Earlier this year, Event celebrated the opening of Everest Through the Lens at the Royal Geographical Society in London. The firm was responsible for shaping the narrative and graphic design of this centenary exhibition, which delves into the story behind the first attempts to summit Mount Everest. The Event team also oversaw project design and delivery.
