One of the most anticipated museum openings this year, for the fashion world, was New York’s new Makeup Museum. While this month’s grand opening is postponed due to COVID-19, the museum is now giving a sneak peek at its collection online.
When it opens to the public, The Makeup Museum aims to be the world’s leading institution exploring the history of beauty. Through interactive exhibits, events and fun experiences, it will tell the story of makeup, beauty and its role in society through the ages. Visitors will have the opportunity to use makeup, enjoy masterclasses and create their own lipstick.
The new museum was set to open this May in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. However, the ongoing situation with coronavirus means that the opening is now on hold. Despite this, the museum is generating excitement about its planned exhibits and events by sharing content online
Makeup Museum goes online
The Makeup Museum’s first exhibition, Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America, will now be revealed online.
Makeup and beauty fans were treated to a look at Marilyn Monroe’s original skincare prescription from 1959 on Instagram. The exhibit is in partnership with Erno Lazlo, which is relaunching the iconic actress’ favourite tinted toner treatment, Shake-It.
The museum will be sharing a range of beauty artifacts through its social media channels to generate interest ahead of the delayed opening, and will also be showing interviews from makeup historians such as Madeleine Marsh, Louise Young and Gabriela Hernandez. These will take place on Instagram Live throughout this week.
Virtual fashion
The Makeup Museum isn’t the only institution to take to the virtual world due to the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this week, the legendary Met Gala took place online via the Vogue YouTube channel, with an address by Anna Wintour and appearances by celebrities.
Beauty lovers might also enjoy Tyra Banks’ ModelLand, a brand new supermodel-themed experiential attraction in Santa Monica.
