Virtual reality (VR) games and attractions use technology to provide immersive and innovative experiences using a headset or goggles. They can be found in contemporary amusement parks, family entertainment centres (FECs), and other visitor destinations.

Common uses of VR for visitor attractions include gaming, rides, exhibitions, and virtual tours, many of which augment VR with haptic technologies with innovations such as Disney’s HoloTile floor providing a fully immersive experience.

VR games are social experiences that can be tailored to a venue’s specific audience profile. Games range from traditional shoot-em-ups to space missions or collaborative cooking challenges, and many employ well-loved IP.

For example, TRANSFORMERS: VR Battle Arena features iconic IP with a standout machine design, together creating an anchor attraction for indoor entertainment spaces. The family-focused game has proven popular around the world.

Squid Game VR offers a social experience for adult gamers. “Squid game is not about shooting; it’s about being collaborative with your friends,” Sandbox VR’s CEO, Steve Zhao, told blooloop. “Either you can work together, or you can sabotage one another. In order to be in that close proximity, the technology needs to be very precise and nuanced. Ours is.”

VR attractions are also used by museums and galleries to offer a new perspective on artworks or historical periods.

For example, Carrickfergus Museum in Ireland developed a VR experience to bring the country’s last witch trial to life.  Musée d’Orsay in Paris created a VR experience which transported guests to a virtual landscape inspired by Van Gogh’s last palette. In addition, some venues, such as the National Gallery in London, provide VR tours of their spaces so that the public can explore the exhibits using headsets at home.
