Bernard Tschumi Architects has completed work on the Exploratorium museum in China, a Science and Technology Museum looking at innovations in urban development, medicine and more.
The museum in Tianjin has giant industrial chimney-shaped exhibition spaces extending from a perforated copper coloured exterior.
A ramp leads up to a rooftop viewing platform which overlooks the surrounding city. Circular lighting creates a constellation effect, while elsewhere in the museum skylights channel natural light into the museum.
The 33,000 square meter museum will open in Autumn. It is designed by Bernard Tschumi Architects.
It was completed in collaboration with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute.
As reported in Dezeen, Bernard Tschumi Architects said: “We designed the Exploratorium to relate to the rich industrial history of the area, the site of high-volume manufacturing and research.”
The museum is part of a planned cultural centre in Binhai. The Binhai Cultural Center will contain galleries and spaces for cultural events and exhibitions. It will also feature office space, restaurants and shops.
The Exploratorium is one of four other buildings planned for Binhai Cultural Center master plan, including the Tianjin Binhai Public Library. The five buildings will be connected by a public corridor sheltered beneath a glass canopy.
