Disney is telling stories in new and exciting ways

Disney+ has announced its first Marvel experience for the Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, launching on 30 May.

Developed by ILM Immersive (formerly ILMxLab), the first-ever Disney+ original story is titled What If…? – An Immersive Story. It is exclusive to the Apple Vision Pro as a free app for a limited time.

The interactive experience is connected to the Disney+ animated series What If…?, and a new trailer below shows what fans can expect.

Billed as a groundbreaking mixed-reality experience, the experience puts Marvel fans in an hour-long, narrative-driven journey where they meet variants from across the multiverse, learn how to cast spells, and harness the power of the Infinity Stones.

It uses the spatial computing capabilities of Apple’s headset to completely transform the space surrounding users.

Fans can use their hands and eyes to interact with the world around them as they are immersed in incredible visuals and spatial audio.

Executive producer Shereif Fattouh from ILM Immersive, Lucasfilm’s award-winning storytelling studio, said the experience is “the result of what can happen when you bring together the incredible talent at ILM Immersive, Marvel Studios, and Disney+ to push the boundaries of technology in the service of telling our stories in new and exciting ways”.

What If…? – An Immersive Story

“This project touches upon the cornerstone of the desire that our studios share to constantly experiment and innovate, and thanks to the capabilities of Apple Vision Pro, we get to place you directly inside a universe that means so much to us all,” he added.

“I can’t wait for fans to become the hero in this completely new way.”

When the Apple Vision Pro was announced last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the product is  “real-life magic”.

Back in 2022, Disney shared plans to turn Disney+ into an “experiential lifestyle platform” that would let users experience the company’s parks “from a virtual standpoint”.
