Modulo Pi, a provider of media server solutions with a user-friendly design, is powering the new Atelier des Enfants interactive experience at Atelier des Lumières.
Spanning 160 square metres, the creative and playful environment uses an advanced technical setup including video projection, LiDAR sensors, and the Modulo Kinetic media server by Modulo Pi to bring art to life through visitor engagement.
Fostering creativity
The new immersive experience at Atelier des Lumières, created by Culturespaces, was revealed in early 2025. Located in a former contemporary exhibition space, Atelier des Enfants reflects Culturespaces’ dedication to the ongoing enrichment and renewal of its offering.
Grégoire Monnier, director of Culturespaces Studio, says: “We’ve always been committed to staying at the forefront of technology, and adding interactive experiences that are in tune with the times felt like a natural extension.
“But our venues are very large, and we welcome a high number of visitors, which can be challenging. That’s why we decided to dedicate a specific room to this type of experience. A more contained space allows us to design an interactive journey that is both engaging and controlled.”
As a result, a Kids’ Atelier has already been established at Port des Lumières, Culturespaces’ most recent digital art centre in Hamburg, Germany. In addition to its primary exhibition area, the attraction features an immersive and interactive sea-themed space that draws inspiration from the port city’s nautical heritage.
The Atelier des Enfants in Paris focuses on the work of Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter recognised for his verdant, exotic imagery.
Monnier says: “We took things a step further in Paris by basing the experience directly on an artist’s work. he experience brings elements from Rousseau’s paintings to life. Visitors remain immersed in the painter’s world, where playfulness and artistic expression meet.”
The Atelier des Enfants, located next to the main exhibition space, depicts a lush jungle with animals and characters inspired by Rousseau’s imagery. Children and adults can express their creativity at colouring tables using templates of animals from the artist’s work, and after scanning, see their drawings in the immersive projection.
This interactive experience was designed and developed by Spectre Lab, a creative studio. To drive the project, Culturespaces deployed Modulo Pi’s Modulo Kinetic media server solution, which has been in use at the Atelier des Lumières since its opening in 2018.
Yannick Kohn, founder and CEO of Modulo Pi, says: “We’re grateful for Culturespaces’ continued trust over the years. Modulo Kinetic is constantly evolving to provide a comprehensive solution for interactive experiences, elegantly combining 2D and 3D elements with real-time show control.”
Integrated, immersive & interactive
The technical components of the installation include eight Epson EB-PU2010 video projectors, which display visuals across a 39-metre-wide surface, with a projection height exceeding three metres.
Modulo Kinetic powers the system using a single dedicated Kinetic Designer workstation and two Kinetic V-Node servers. Furthermore, four Hokuyo 2D LiDAR sensors are installed at the top of some of the gallery’s walls.
Four unique QR codes can be found on each animal template at the colouring stations. When visitors have finished their drawings, they then scan their artwork. A discreet Modulo Bridge device creates a network bridge between the scanner and Modulo Kinetic, which allows immediate communication between the systems.
Modulo Kinetic reads the QR codes, identifies the animal, and instantly matches the scanned image with the relevant media and animation. The drawing is processed in real time, mapped as a texture onto a pre-rigged 3D object and added to the projection display. After just seconds, the scanned animal is brought to life with its own unique colours, and fully integrated into the jungle on the Atelier’s walls.
This process is driven by the node-based compositing tool in Modulo Kinetic, which is used to create real-time animations. The media server’s timelines then enable perfect blending for video playback and interactive 3D layers.
When projected on the gallery walls, the visitors’ artworks also become interactive. Modulo Kinetic instantly detects when a scanned drawing is touched, supported by Hokuyo LiDAR sensors. The media server then triggers visual and sound effects to enhance immersion.
Additionally, visitors can discover playful animations inspired by Rousseau’s jungle by touching other elements in the interactive environment.
The resulting experience has been well received by visitors. “Children and parents alike love coloring the drawings and seeing their creations come to life,” says Monnier. “The feedback has been very positive, and the space is particularly popular on weekends.”
