The Milwaukee Public Museum has announced that it will move to a new downtown location within the next ten years.

The decision not to renovate the museum’s existing home comes after a two year feasibility study, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

MPM President and CEO, Dennis Kois, said that both options would cost over $100 million.

The decision is seen as key to protecting the museum’s collection of more than 4.5 million artefacts.

Kois added that the process would take around a decade to complete and the new museum would definitely have a place for the dome theatre and planetarium.

A search is now on for a new location while officials and supporters consider funding options.

The news comes amid a major staffing restructure which will affect the museum’s 141 employees. 15 jobs have already been cut.

According to Kois, the reorganisation will bring the staff in a better alignment with the natural and human history museum’s scientific mission.

He said it was imperative that the museum positions itself for the future.

Restructuring is intended to reduce operating costs by $1 million and strengthen the museum’s financial position.

Kois himself has reportedly taken a voluntary pay cut along with four vice presidents.

On the bright side, the museum has had a successful few years. Attendance has increased 33% since 2014 to more than 548,000 visitors last year.
