D3D Cinema and Christie launch next generation Laser CineDome

Created to replace film-based 70mm theatre systems in museums and science centres, the Laser CineDome platform hit the market in late 2016. Now D3D Cinema has teamed up with Christie to launch a next generation upgrade – Gen2 – at a price point lower than the original.

This new evolution of the giant dome projection platform features Christie’s new D4K40-RGB pure laser projector. Offering an immensely expanded contrast ratio, it produces even richer colours and dazzling, stunningly lifelike visuals. This is a critical specification of D3D’s clients in the institutional museum cinema sector.

“As a former institutional giant dome theatre director, I’ve been most impressed by the stellar focus uniformity, brightness uniformity and resolution produced by our three-projector 6K solution,” says Art Mercurio, D3D Cinema’s vice-president of technology. “It produces a noticeably better image when compared to the muddy edges, hot spots and pixelated screen-door effect inherent to a single-projector/single-lens solution.”

Coupled with CineDome’s industry-leading high frame rate capabilities of up to 120 frames per second, the Christie D4K40-RGB delivers 6K resolution. The projectors also feature a patented sealed optical path. Powerful yet energy efficient, they operate on single-phase 220V power and do not require a specialised exhaust for heat dispersal. This makes them significantly more cost-effective than competitor models.

The Gen2 Laser CineDome platform will be released in the second quarter of this year.

D3D Cinema offers digital cinema and virtual reality solutions and services to museum and attraction industry clients worldwide. It also provides exclusive content to the BirdlyVR platform. Meanwhile Christie markets some of the world’s most advanced projectors and complete system displays.
