SimEx-Iwerks to create 4D attraction based on Technicolor underwater adventure series The Deep

Academy-Award winning creator of immersive 3D and 4D attractions, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment, has signed a deal with Technicolor to develop a 4D theatrical experience based on underwater adventure series, The Deep.

The Deep: Mystery of the Ancient Amulet will deliver a 12-minute, fully immersive 3D viewing experience enhanced with 4D special effects including vibrating seats, bubbles, water spray and more.

The in-theatre attraction is slated to play at zoos, theme parks, SEA LIFEĀ aquariums and other venues globally next year.

The storyline will continue the underwater adventures of the Nekton family. Originally created by best-selling comic book author and playwright,Ā Tom Taylor, the team uses cutting-edge technology to explore the unknown depths of the oceans.

When the family acquires a mysterious amulet from a suspicious black market dealer, they embark on their ocean journey in search of answers.Ā But, before long, disaster strikes. The amulet is stolen by The Dark Orca pirates, and then lost in caverns beneath the seafloor. When the Nektons finally recover the amulet, they discover its extraordinary connection to a nearby island.

Creative lead on the project is Steven Wendland, VP Animation and Creative Head, Technicolor Creative Development. He will serve as both director and executive producer, with Technicolor Animation providing the 3-D CG animation. Scripts, storyboards and music will be provided by Australiaā€™s A Stark Production, with Canadaā€™s DHX Media contributing post-production sound design and sound mix.

ā€œSimEx-Iwerks Entertainment is unparalleled in its field and weā€™re thrilled to be creating this 4D The Deep adventure with them,ā€ observes Wendland.

ā€œNow that The Deep is broadcast in over 130 territories, itā€™s exciting to see the brand finding a new home in theme parks and other live attractions around the world.ā€

ā€œThe Deep delivers exactly what our partners across the globe wantā€”an action-packed, family-based adventure,ā€ adds Mike Frueh, Senior Vice President, Licensing and Distribution, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment.

ā€œAdditionally, the tie to the ocean will inspire young guests towards environmental stewardship which is an important message to our many zoo and aquarium partners worldwide.ā€
